Because I'm nosey!

I finally weakened and decide to see what was going on with Twitter.
I joined in January 2007, but never used it, as I didn't know anyone else who did, or ever would.
But now, I do know people who use it...perhaps it's finally reached critical mass for me? There's no guarantee I'll actually make much use of it, but it seems more interesting when there's people you're interested in posting on it. And it's letting me rant about my crappy day while my boss isn't there to hear it...

I'm a Luddite, but I'm also always willing to change my mind if I can be persuaded of the usefullness of things!

I was going to say it's like the opposite to my Facebook account, in that it's workmates only, whereas Facebook is friends only, then realised I've got a bit of crossover of both on Facebook.

Note to self - the next social network you join needs to have a way of separating out groups and allowing them only a certain amount of access to you. "Work" group sees only the updates / info you tag as "professional", friends get to see everything...

Facebook does have limited group controls now - available under the privacy option - although they tend to be applied to types of information rather than instances of information - more rules than tags.

Weirdly, the site I know offers the most impressive and customisable group controls is LiveJournal, although its reputation as a teenage angst fest can mean it doesn't sit very well in a work context.

So weird that you posted about Twitter because I've had an account since last year too and decided just this week to figure out what the heck it's all about! Apparently it can be used to promote social justice...although in my case it'll probably be used as another excuse to procrastinate...

Careering along

When I look around at the activities of information professional groups, it seems that there’s a disparity. There’s quite often a lot of support and funding available for those who’re just starting out in the profession, but a desert of nothingness for those of us who’re “just getting on with it”. If you’re a new professional, you have lots of groups to support you as you progress in your early career, various prize funds available for essay and report writing, access to bursaries for conference attendance, eligibility for awards for being new and enthusiastic. But what do you get when you’re past that bright-eyed-and-bushy-tailed first 5 years (5 years seems to be the approximate cut-off point for becoming “established” and no longer new).
