Knowing when to give in


Bloglines, I'm not going to mince my words here, or break it to you gently: it's all over between us. I don't know if you noticed, but I actually dumped you about a month ago.
I'd got fed up with your lack of attention, your seeming lack of knowledge that I existed...but the final straw was when you went away. For a day. Without telling me about it.
Eventually, you got your idiot friend the plumber (or whatever he claims to be) to make an excuse on your behalf, but it was too late. I didn't trust you any more. How could I, when you left me in the lurch like that?
At least Google was there for me in my time of need. I'd given it a backup version of my feeds long ago...I never thought I'd have to turn to it in desperation.
Look what you drove me to, Bloglines.

Goodbye.

Welcome to the dark side - Google claims another soul to its black flabby heart. You're in good company - I dumped bloglines a while back and moved across to Google Reader.

@Geeklawyer You know I'd never marry you again. Fool me once... :)

@Phil The only reason I held out so long against Google is, 'cos, well, it's Google? It's turning into as big a monopoly as Microsoft, and monopolies are never good!

Whaaat? Monopoly is great! With the dog, and the hat, and the thing... ;-) The other thing about google is that it works, doesn't it? Can you knock that? BTW, I don't have shares in google...

Cataloguing: an arcane art, where each piece of punctuation is significant, and commas and semi colons are all-powerful. Careering along

When I look around at the activities of information professional groups, it seems that there’s a disparity. There’s quite often a lot of support and funding available for those who’re just starting out in the profession, but a desert of nothingness for those of us who’re “just getting on with it”. If you’re a new professional, you have lots of groups to support you as you progress in your early career, various prize funds available for essay and report writing, access to bursaries for conference attendance, eligibility for awards for being new and enthusiastic. But what do you get when you’re past that bright-eyed-and-bushy-tailed first 5 years (5 years seems to be the approximate cut-off point for becoming “established” and no longer new). What happens when you’ve already received a bursary from an organisation earlier in your career and so wouldn’t be eligible for one now, meaning you’re not able to attend events or training?
